John Bowker's residency
at Knockalisheen >>

Percussion is an artform that features in nearly all cultures. John Bowker's participation in this project was an enormous asset. His teaching style is deceptively relaxed - he makes the teaching of quite complex rhythms to absolute beginners seem easy. He has collected poly-rhythms from all around the world, on a number of percussive instruments ranging from the Djembe drum to the Clave sticks, the Agogo bell to Latin congas. He also teaches multi-lingual harmonic singing, and his work emphasises the celebratory nature of rhythm.

I am a musician and percussion teacher - I have great experience working with groups, and am aware of sensitivities around very many issues. My grounding in counselling skills has proved invaluable to me in this work. My aim is not performance, but instead creating a time of nurturing, exploring, communicating and sharing...
