The hand drum is a perfect tool for non-verbal communication - playing and exploring rhythm is great fun, challenging and yet very accessible.

It is a great way of establishing a rapport in a new community - building a sense of a team. This is because simple goals are easily achieved. Holding a rhythm in one group whilst another group holds a different rhythm boosts confidence and self-esteem. Songs, rhythms and dances are culturally universal - I have a deep knowledge of simple, beautiful pieces to explore, from many cultural backgrounds - African, Latin American, Native American, Maori etc.

These cultural gifts give great happiness and are a lovely way for a group to celebrate each other. I would encourage those that are ready and able to share songs, dances and rhythms from their cultural background. When this happens, the group receives a great gift - the giver gains a deepened sense of the value of themselves, their gifts and their cultural heritage.

The drum is an invaluable tool. Placed centrally in the work that I do, it gives great energy and a strong sense of empowerment and celebration to any group working with it...
