The idea of constructing a website, one that would feature work in progress from all of the residencies, is to create a window onto the somewhat sealed world of the asylum seeker. Musa Engelbrecht, is a painter, ceramicist and website designer. He has lived in Ireland for 25 years, but was at one time a lecturer in Graphic Design in his native South Africa.
His virtual gallery www.galwaybaygallery.com is a showcase for his own work and many of the interesting artists working in the west of Ireland today.

Creating this web site was an intense emotional journey for me. It took me back 25 years to the height of oppression in South Africa and the very real experience of leaving loved ones behind...

My response to the theme "REFUGEE" as digital artist was a remarkable and moving one, inspired by a poem by the Iranian poet Hossein Bagher Zadeh...

I also had the good fortune to design the CD cover of a professional recording that John Bowker produced during his residency, with residents of Knockalisheen...

Creating this web site was a wonderful creative challenge for me...
Not only as an artist/designer but as programmer too.
How to integrate sound in the site so that most visitors can access it?
What about people on slow dial-up access to the internet?
What about people with old out-of-date browsers?
I hope that I have come somewhere close to solving these issues...
