Veronica Nicholson's residency
at Knockalisheen >>

Photography is such an intrinsic part of Western culture that the essential 'magic' of writing with light [photo = light; graph = to write] is often forgotten. Veronica Nicholson has travelled the world, photographing people and places, most recently for the Millennium Book Project The Scattering. She has also experimented widely with printing processes that can be achieved without the use of a darkroom. This is a very accessible artform, and one that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

I have travelled and photographed in many parts of the world, including the USA, Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan. Essentially we are all the same and photography is the perfect medium to show that; there is also not much need for words.

The residents have definitely appreciated having photographs to send back to family and friends. We had good fun, so I believe they have enjoyed the sessions as there is so little for them to do...

Some of them expressed an interest in learning about photography, so I taught them as we went...
