The 3 Early Christian Churches of Oughtmama
Oughtmama (in Irish 'Ucht Mama' means the breast of the mountain pass or
the breast of the high pass) is said to have been founded by the 3 Colmans,
but the association is uncertain. There are the extensive remains of 3 churches
with many early Christian architectural features. A decorated stone font survives
and the area around the churches exhibits many signs of early settlement.
North of the churches are the remains of terraced gardens and enormous earthen
embankments constructed to carry the water for a now vanished mill. The well
of St. Colman (620AD) lies a small distance to the north-east and from this
vantage point you can see the whole of the site in all its beauty. MORE
